Well my friends, it has been a busy couple of weeks. At the end of September I headed up to Canadian Forces Base Borden to talk about instructional design, interactive 3D simulations, and some of the lessons learned in transforming training. Every time I head up there I amazed at the passion of the people we meet, people who are so focused on excelling as instructors by producing excellent students that I get inspired by every conversation. Our product marketing manager was just back from Germany and I was his chauffeur. Let me tell you, the two of us should not be allowed to spend too much time together. After taking the wrong exit, doing stretches in the parking lot....well, it's no wonder our new mantra is "Don't ask. We're marketing!"
I got home on a Thursday and promptly started preparing for a dinner party the following night with my besties. On the menu was homemade leek and cauliflower soup, lasagne and salad or vegetarian chili for those anti-beast eaters, and vanilla cake with strawberries for desert. Thankfully I could make the sauce and soup the night before with no consequence and I'd made the chili before I left for Borden - which I prefer as I think the chili tastes better after sitting for a couple of days (not the same for a meat version).
Friends arrived and we had lots to celebrate. CH recently got engaged to SM which was so thrilling. He'd even asked her Pops for permission the long-weekend prior when we were all at the cottage - sneaky sneaky I must say. How those two kept it all a secret I'll never know. AF had just returned from a glorious honeymoon and TP and JN announced their relocation plans to Spain and Australia respectively. What fun! There was a moment in between the soup and the main that I was in the kitchen listening to all the laughter and stories thinking - why don't we do this all the time? There is nothing better than a dinner party!! The inviting smells, comforting food, good wine, fun friends and the laughs. It was a lovely evening - particularly as I could send all the leftovers home with them. Thank you Tupperware!
This week Mum and Dad came into the city so that we could go to Cirque du Soleil's Banana Shpeel. It was quite good. Very vaudeville and very different from other Cirques that I've seen. The contortionists and the Russian gymnast that defies gravity. Highly recommend if you get a chance to go - but don't think it's kid friendly. There is a lot of language and jokes that aren't ideally suited for a younger audience - good thing we went to the matinee which meant busloads of school kids!
After the performance, we headed to my fave Tabule for a yummy dinner and headed home. I'd been feeling a bit tired all week but chalked it up to the crazy schedule I'd been keeping. That was not the case - I woke up two days ago with step throat. Not fun! I'm feeling better and glad to still be home. While my own bed would've been nice and feeling guilty about putting all this on my folks, it's been nice to have easy access to a diagnosis and Mum to pamper me with homemade goodies!
If I need a conclusion to this post, it's this: No matter how grown-up your life may seem, getting sick and being taken care of by your parents is a great way to feel like you're young again.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
