Working frome home....a rip-off list

Today a friend of mine shared with me a funny cartoon about the Awesome and Horrible attributes of working from home by The Oatmeal. It certainly rings true in many ways and so I thought I'd write my own list about what works and what doesn't:

1. Works - Not having to get up at 6:30 to commute downtown. Instead, I get up at 6:30 to go swimming at the local pool.
2. Doesn't Work - Missing out on the current events of downtown Toronto. Like Zupa's on Adelaide being sold.  Missing out on the G20 barricade. Lunch time trips to Winners or Queen Street for some retail therapy.
3. Works - No need for retail therapy as I can wear whatever I want. Today, it's capris and a t-shirt. There is a definite bonus on not needing a work-wardrobe and every-day-life attire. Now it's pretty much all one, save for that one skirt I keep for meetings.
4. Doesn't Work - Ok, so I will admit. On the days that I get up early and go to the pool or head out for a quick run, I am GOLD. It's early, I hit up a Starbucks on the way home. I have a shower. And then I hit the computer by 8:00. On the days I don't workout in the morning. Well, let's just say, I roll out of bed at 8:30, brush my teeth and hope no one will come to the door.
5. Works - I have almost forgotten what stress is. I mean sure, there are still deadlines to meet and things that need to be delivered last-minute that get the ol' heart pumping, but in general the stress of working in an adrenaline-crazed office is but a distant memory. Phew!
6. Doesn't Work - Lack of meetings. I used to complain that I had so many meetings that my "real work" had to happen at home. Now, I only have a couple of meetings a week which means I can go a looooong time without talking to anyone. It also means there's nothing to break up my day. Helloooooo Bueller?
7. Works - Without the stress and need to take work home with me, I now have so much more energy and time to spend with friends and family. It is amazing. Before all I wanted to do was leave the office and crawl into bed. Now, all I want to do is get out and see people. This is a wicked benefito!
8. Doesn't Work - My work is always here. It takes quite a bit of practice - and reorganizing my office space - to get to a place where I can recognize when to shut things down. What can I say, I like what I do.
9. Works - I can say what I want, do what I want, and there's no judgement. In cubieland, that is never the case and you have to be so careful not to say something incriminating/honest in an office environment.
10. Doesn't Work - Ok, so basically the point of all of this is that it does work for me. Um....but friends? Can you make sure to email/IM/call me and make sure I'm alive if you don't hear from me for a couple of days?
